What is DiSC?

DiSC is a non-judgmental way of looking at someone’s behavior so that they can see where their behavioral choices are effective and ineffective, based on the goals they are trying to achieve. It is also an extremely useful tool for predicting behavior in the future based on a variety of factors, such as stress (a key factor in the business world, as well as personal life), and the cultural expectations of the environment in which the person operates (referred to as “adaptive behavior”).

When you take the DiSC assessment <link to difference between assessment, test, survey> you receive an easy-to-understand report with descriptions and charts showing what your behavioral preferences are, how they relate to and interact with the styles of others. This is an essential tool as it allows you to put your learning to work immediately. Immediate application = immediate improved results.

In addition to understanding more about your own behavioral style and the tendencies (styles) of others, DiSC behavioral reports show you how to leverage your strengths, how to recognize when your strengths are being over-used to the point of becoming liabilities, and how to mitigate the challenges inherent in each behavioral style.

How or why is DiSC valuable for me to learn?

When you work in a business, or are engaged in any kind of relationship, the “make it or break it” issues which arise between people are primarily around communication and behavior. DiSC directly addresses these key points of contention and provides a systematic, step-by-step way to manage your business, your team, your employees, and yourself, to a greater, more productive effect.

Not only will you and your colleagues understand themselves and each other better, because of the guidance inherent in the DiSC reports and training, you will stop “putting up with” other people’s styles. Instead, team members learn to recognize and value the contributions from different styles, seeing how they can have a direct, positive impact on results. When everyone understands themselves better and has a common, non-judgmental language to use for exploring differences or conflicts, expectations are clarified, trust is built and interpersonal conflict is reduced, which means…

  • Workers are much more productive
  • Teams become more productive
  • Managers become leaders
  • Customers are more satisfied, making it easier to build long-term, sustainable customer relationships
  • And team members express greater satisfaction with their work and workplace

Why use the DiSC assessment vs. just having a meeting to talk about goals and behavior?

In conversations without a guided format, it is easy for people to adopt a “right or wrong” attitude, which increases defensiveness and reduces, if not eliminates, the usefulness of the meeting.

With DiSC assessments, scores are interpreted as personal preferences or reflections of behavior in specific situations. This means there ARE no right or wrong answers, and with proper introduction, training, or coaching, team members do not fall into self-judgment or being judged by others or the person administering the assessment.

The DiSC assessment was designed to address business issues – behaviors which occur in the business setting. It is not a “personality test” which would be easy to manipulate, and would be wrought with subjectivity. Instead, the DiSC is powerful because it focuses on behavior, and because it is the most researched behavioral assessment available, it is also the most reliable and valid of all behavioral assessments

Assessments are more objective and valuable than the boss/coach/trainer’s opinion alone. While another’s opinion may be accurate, having the data from the assessment lends credibility to others” comments and observations.

Assessments simplify complex issues. Complex issues can be overwhelming initially. By providing a model, a system, the complex issues can be broken down into understandable units, thus making it easier to progress. The issue may remain a complex one, but it is no longer complicated.
